I'm an American and moved to Italy.

First trip to the doctor, was actually a ski slope accident .

I paid zilch. Nada......Niente........Nothing......and that was for emergency room care, an ambulance ride, xrays, and doctor consulations. I expected a hefty bill, and they told me to get lost.

All I had was my permesso di soggiorno. Now, I am a full fledged citizen.......and I pay plenty for visits to specialists.

Go figure.

There is no need of private insurance.
The INPS provides for all.
